Edward Sanford forwarder's oval with ship vignette, red "Boston Br.
Pkt. Paid 24c Aug. 31" credit datestamp, red "5 Cents" applied in England,
routed "per Europa" from England, Very Fine, an extremely rare
example of Adams Melbourne express from Australia, the Adams & Co.
Australia operation last briefly, from May 1853 to June 1855 (see Levy and
Hahn articles in Collectors Club Philatelist, May-June 1982 and

(Gutman NY-D) on back of greenish folded cover to London, England,
docketing indicates origin at Boston Feb. 28, 1842, black De Forest & Co.
New York forwarder's oval over Hale marking, "1842 Ap 1/Liverpool/Ship" and
London receiving datestamps on back, ms. "8" due, soiled along file folds,
otherwise Very Fine, Gutman reports seven covers with this Hale handstamp
(not including this cover), ex Schwartz

four with "Forwarded through Gilpin's Exchange, Reading Room and Foreign
Letter Office N-York" red or black oval (two to London, one to Glasgow, one
to Switzerland, all with ship letter handstamps), Very Fine, a scarce and
