on small cover to Miss Abbie Baldwin at Lahaina, stamp with few trivial
toning spots incl. one from gum at cornerVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND

1866, 5c Blue (32).
Cancelled by light target, used with U.S. 10c Green, E. Grill (89),
natural wide s.e., both tied by circle of wedges cancels, incorrectly
struck black "Honolulu Hawaiian Islands Aug. 7" (ca. 1868) circular
datestamp (for unpaid postage) and "San Francisco Cal. Aug. 19" transit
datestamp on bright yellow cover to Reading Mich., clear strike of magenta
oval "Hawaiian Steam Service" handstamp, a few sealed tears at top
edge of cover do not affect stampsVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE
MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE HAWAIIAN 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA ISSUE, 10-CENT
1868 GRILLED ISSUE AND "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL. The 5c stamp
paid the internal Hawaiian postage, and the 10c stamp paid the Pacific Mail
Steamship Company contract mail rate from Hawaii to the U.S. The Honolulu
post office occasionally used the "Hawaiian-Islands" datestamp in black
instead of the "U.S. Postage Paid" in red when postmarking PMSS Co.
contract mail. Ex Knapp and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1976 P.F.

1914, January 18, Koloa,
Kauai, Hawaiian Islands Experimental Flying Exhibition (AAMC 78). 1c
Green tied by unusually clear strike of "Koloa Jan. 20, 1914 11AM" duplex
cancel on picture post card depicting Tom Gunn in flight, addressed to
Honolulu Hawaii, purple "Aerial Mail Route/Tom Gunn/Carrier" three-line
handstamp, red "Honolulu Hawaii Gen. Del. Jan. 21, 1914" double-circle
datestamp, card with trivial corner bendsVERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS
IS THE FINER OF THE TWO PIECES OF MAIL KNOWN FROM THIS PIONEER FLIGHT. A
GREAT PIONEER AIR POST RARITY. According to the American Air Mail
Catalogue, Chinese aviator Tom Gunn made two flights on Jan. 18, and
mail was carried on at least one of them. AAMC value $5,500.00. The other
example, with a significantly less distinct cancel, realized $8,000.00
