UNITED STATES CARRIERS continued...

Charleston, South Carolina (Honour's)
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1176° c imageHonour's City Express, Charleston S.C., 2c Black on Yellow (4LB2). Darker shade of paper, cut to shape, slightly impinging on oval frame, cancelled by two faint pen strokes, affixed with red wax wafer to Jun. 26, 1850 folded letter to New York, red "Charleston S.C. Jun. 26/10" integral-rate circular datestamp and matching "Paid" straightline, stamp has trivial wrinkles caused by wafer and a small tear

FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE HONOUR'S OVAL STAMP ON YELLOW PAPER, THREE OF WHICH ARE USED ON COVER. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CARRIER STAMPS.

John H. Honour, Superintendent of the Charleston Penny Post, advertised the commencement of carrier service in the Charleston Mercury on May 9, 1849. The earliest recorded Honour's cover is postmarked May 24, 1849, establishing the oval stamp on Yellow paper (Scott 4LB2) as the likely first issue of the Charleston carrier stamps. The same design on Brown Rose paper (4LB1) is recorded with July and August 1849 dates. The wording and configuration are identical to the contemporary Boyd's Eagle & Globe stamps (without the Eagle vignette).

We record four examples of the oval stamp on Yellow paper: 1) May 24, 1849 cover, ex Chapman, Caspary, Boker, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 206, realized $15,500 hammer), 2) Jul. 18, 1849 cover, used with 10c 1847, ex Caspary, Middendorf, 3) Jun. 26, 1850, the cover offered here, ex Ferrary, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 207, realized $6,500 hammer), and 4) Cut to shape, off cover, uncancelled, ex Lilly.

Ex Ferrary and Golden. With 1999 P.F. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Scott. (Image)

Oct. 4/5" integral-rate circular datestamp on blue folded cover to Stateburg S.C., undated but 1849 usage based on postmark type, stamp has tiny scrape at top and light soiling or cancel

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE HONOUR'S 4LB7 STAMP TIED BY THE CHARLESTON DATESTAMP -- ONLY TWO OTHER SIMILARLY-TIED COVERS ARE KNOWN TO US.

The "Honour's/City Post/2 Cents" stamp on Yellow paper was evidently the first of the rectangular typeset stamps that followed the first oval issue. This October 1849 usage (year date based on postmark type) is very early (most others are used in 1850). We are aware of two other covers with this stamp tied by the red datestamp and used alone, one of which sold in our Golden sale for $8,000 hammer. (Image)
