FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE HONOUR'S OVAL STAMP ON YELLOW PAPER, THREE OF WHICH ARE USED ON COVER. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CARRIER STAMPS.
John H. Honour, Superintendent of the Charleston Penny Post, advertised the commencement of carrier service in the Charleston Mercury on May 9, 1849. The earliest recorded Honour's cover is postmarked May 24, 1849, establishing the oval stamp on Yellow paper (Scott 4LB2) as the likely first issue of the Charleston carrier stamps. The same design on Brown Rose paper (4LB1) is recorded with July and August 1849 dates. The wording and configuration are identical to the contemporary Boyd's Eagle & Globe stamps (without the Eagle vignette).
We record four examples of the oval stamp on Yellow paper: 1) May 24, 1849 cover, ex Chapman, Caspary, Boker, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 206, realized $15,500 hammer), 2) Jul. 18, 1849 cover, used with 10c 1847, ex Caspary, Middendorf, 3) Jun. 26, 1850, the cover offered here, ex Ferrary, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 207, realized $6,500 hammer), and 4) Cut to shape, off cover, uncancelled, ex Lilly.
Ex Ferrary and Golden. With 1999 P.F. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Scott. (Image)
FINE. ONE OF FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE HONOUR'S 1849 OVAL STAMP ON BROWN-ROSE PAPER, THREE OF WHICH ARE CUT RECTANGULAR.
We record five examples of Scott 4LB1 as follows: 1) cut rectangular, in at top, used on Aug. 16, 1849 cover, ex Hind, Golden, D.K. Collection (Siegel Sale 862, lot 16, realized $15,500 hammer), 2) cut to shape (brighter Pink paper), used with 10c 1847 on Jul. 14, 1849 cover, ex Hessel, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 210, realized $37,500 hammer), 3) cut rectangular, in at top, on piece dated Aug. 19, 1849, the item offered here, ex Worthington, Caspary, Boker, Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 208, realized $9,000 hammer), 4) cut to shape, cancelled by red Charleston circular datestamp (June date, no year), minor faults, ex Middendorf, and 5) cut to shape, sealed tear, added to 1851 cover with Jan. 24 datestamp, Siegel Sale 164, ex Hall.
Ex Worthington, Caspary, Boker and Golden. With 1999 P.F. certificate. Scott values are: rectangular-cut stamp unused ($10,000.00 for this stamp, based on the 1999 realization) and cut to-shape used or unused ($4,000.00) (Image)
VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE HONOUR'S 4LB7 STAMP TIED BY THE CHARLESTON DATESTAMP -- ONLY TWO OTHER SIMILARLY-TIED COVERS ARE KNOWN TO US.
The "Honour's/City Post/2 Cents" stamp on Yellow paper was evidently the first of the rectangular typeset stamps that followed the first oval issue. This October 1849 usage (year date based on postmark type) is very early (most others are used in 1850). We are aware of two other covers with this stamp tied by the red datestamp and used alone, one of which sold in our Golden sale for $8,000 hammer. (Image)
VERY FINE FOR A COVER OF THIS SIZE AND VARIETY. ONLY THREE VALENTINES BEARING A MULTIPLE OF THE HONOUR'S 4LB8 STAMP ARE RECORDED. AN OUTSTANDING CARRIER USAGE.
The 6c rate was probably a special carrier fee for large Valentines delivered during the season.
With 1976 P.F. certificate. (Image)
