California City Letter Express Co, California Penny Post Co.
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1443° c imageCalifornia City Letter Express Co., San Francisco, 10c Blue, Type III, Without Ornaments (33L8). Large to huge margins, ample to clear at left, neatly cancelled by usual ms. line (not tied as usual), used with 10c Green (68), corner creases, tied by cogwheel with "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 31, 1862" double-circle datestamp on cover to Providence R.I.

VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE CALIFORNIA CITY LETTER EXPRESS TYPE III STAMP IN BLUE -- THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED 33L8 COVER AND ONE OF TWO COVERS WITH ANY OF THE CALIFORNIA CITY LETTER EXPRESS ISSUES AND REGULAR UNITED STATES POSTAGE.

Our records -- updated from the Golden sale -- contain just two examples of the Blue Type III (without ornaments) stamp, Scott 33L8. One is used on the cover offered here, and the other is a repaired off-cover stamp (ex Schwartz, D.K. Collection, Siegel Sale 862, lot 67, realized $3,500 hammer). There is only one other California City Letter Express Co. combination cover recorded, with 33L1 and a 10c 1861 used together, which realized $21,000 hammer in our Golden sale.

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE PRINTED FRANK FOR HOOGS & MADISON'S CALIFORNIA LETTER EXPRESS.

A small number of private posts operated in San Francisco during the 1862 to 1867 period, including Frey's Valentine Express, Appleton's Valentine Express, Hoogs & Madison, Robinson & Co., George A. Carnes, William E. Loomis, Gahagan & Howe and the San Francisco City Letter Express (under different owners). Stamps and franked envelopes were issued by these local posts. This distinctive horse-and-rider design is one of the rarest.

Ex Pearce and Haas. Illustrated in Letters of Gold (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE MULTIPLE. PROBABLY THE LARGEST EXISTING BLOCK OF THIS CALIFORNIA PENNY POST ISSUE.

Ex Lilly, Boker and Golden (Siegel Sale 817, lot 867, realized $7,500 hammer). Scott Retail of $4,00.00 as blocks of four and singles (with no premium for the wide spacing) does not do justice to the rarity of this item. (Image)

1447° imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 5c Blue (34L2). Large margins, ostensibly "tied" by "Sacramento City Cal. Apr. 3, 1860" circular datestamp on 3c Red Nesbitt entire to Coloma, the Penny Post Co. went out of business in 1856, therefore this cannot be a genuine use of the stamp in 1860, ex Haas (Image) E. 200-300

1448° ng imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 5c Blue (34L4). Unused (no gum), rich color, few thin spots, small tear at top, otherwise Fine, with 1997 A.P.S. certificate (Image) 600.00

1449° c image10c Green, Ty. II (14). A superb stamp with full even margins, intense shade and early impression, tied by "New-York Ship Sep. 8" (1855) circular datestamp on "Via Nicaragua" imprint cover to Dorchester Mass., placed on board the Vanderbilt Line's Uncle Sam in San Francisco with California Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 5c Blue (34L4) stamp affixed at upper left and uncancelled as usual, entered mails in New York and missent to Gloucester Mass., perfectly struck blue "Gloucester Ms. Sep. 10" circular datestamp with tiny "MISSENT" straightline, redirected to Dorchester, faint gum stains around 10c stamp, 5c trivial corner crease, small edge tear at top not affecting stamps or markings

EXTREMELY FINE. THE FINEST OF THE EIGHT RECORDED INTACT COVERS BEARING THIS SAN FRANCISCO LOCAL POST STAMP. THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH THIS COMBINATION OF MARKINGS.

The California Penny Post Co. took this letter to the wharf for mailing aboard the next outbound vessel via the Vanderbilt Line's Nicaragua route. The 5c stamp paid for this service. On arrival in New York it was treated as an incoming ship letter and postmarked with the "New-York Ship" circular datestamp. The census by Larry Lyons in The Penny Post (October 2005) reports ten 34L4 covers, but two have 10c stamps missing.

The New York Sep. 8 (1855) datestamp coincides with the arrival date of the Vanderbilt Line's Northern Light, which sailed from San Juan del Norte on or about August 31. The Vanderbilt Line's Uncle Sam left San Francisco on August 18, arriving at San Juan del Sur on August 29, while Colonel William Walker controlled the town and briefly prevented passengers from crossing the Isthmus. News of these events were published in the New York Herald on September 9, the day after this mail arrived (source: Wierenga, U.S. Incoming Steamship Mail 1847-1875, p. 334 and 368).

1450° c imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 2c Black Entire (34LU1). Printed frank with instructions for users, 3c Brownish Carmine (11), ample to large margins including part of stamp at left, in at right, tied by bold "San Francisco Cal. 30 Aug." (1855) circular datestamp, on entire to Marysville street address, backstamped "DETAINED FOR POSTAGE" in large block letters and "San Francisco Cal. 30 Aug. 3 Paid" integral-rate circular datestamp, "Paid" straightline on front, docketed "1855 Oct. 17 Filed" on back, faint stains and vertical fold

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF THE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST 2-CENT FRANK AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO "DETAINED FOR POSTAGE" HANSTAMP.

This inter-city express and local post operated for about one year in 1855 and 1856. Examples of its 2c printed envelopes, which paid the rate for delivery to the post office, are extremely rare (six reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post). In this instance, it appears that the letter was placed in the San Francisco post office without a 3c stamp, which was required on inter-city Penny Post mail. The post office marked the letter "Detained for Postage," and, on August 30, 1855, the 3c stamp was applied and cancelled. Another possibility is that the 3c stamp was not recognized by the San Francisco post office, which had an ongoing feud with Goodwin over his operation, and that the "3 Paid" integral-rate circular datestamp indicates additional payment was received in coin.

Nesbitt, ex Knapp, Meroni, Boker and Hawley (Image) 1,750.00
