Is./March 29, 1851. Well-struck italic-style two-line handstamp in
black (Ty. 20, Scarcity 2) on folded letter from Thaddeus Pomeroy to his
brother George in New York City, red "San Francisco 1 May" circular
datestamp and red crayon "42" rate (40c transcontinental rate plus 2c ship
captain's fee), some small internal erosion showing only on address panel
near top right corner and easily restorableVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFULLY
STRUCK EXAMPLE OF THE HONOLULU STRAIGHTLINE POSTMARK. ONE OF THE
OUTSTANDING POSTAL HISTORY RARITIES OF HAWAII. According to
www.hawaiianstamps.com, this cover was carried aboard the Columbus,
which departed Honolulu on Apr. 1 1851, arriving in San Francisco on Apr.
20. It was then carried aboard the Oregon from San Francisco to
Panama on May 1, 1851. There are currently 34 recorded examples of the
Honolulu straightline in the Gregory census (including eight in
blue). In this letter, Thaddeus Pomeroy reports to his brother that he
is unable to travel due to illness and leaks in the ship, writing: "I
have been revelling the last six months in the idea of getting home to die
comfortably at the old homestead this summer & if the Barque had not
returned I should probably have succeeded, as the fates have denied me that
privilege I must now be content to remain here some two or three months &
then return to live.." No. 33 in Gregory's Inaugural Treaty Period

Is./Feb. 26, 1851. Perfectly-struck italic-style two-line handstamp in
black (Ty. 20, Scarcity 2) on cover to Sophia Fairchild in Cazenovia N.Y.,
red "San Francisco 1 Apr." circular datestamp and red crayon "42" rate (40c
transcontinental rate plus 2c ship captain's fee), one side flap is missing
and faults along edges have been simply repaired with hingesVERY FINE
STRIKE OF THE HONOLULU STRAIGHTLINE, THE FIRST HANDSTAMPED POSTMARK OF
HAWAII. According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, this cover was carried
aboard the Louisa Baille, which departed Honolulu on Feb. 26, 1851,
arriving in San Francisco on Mar. 25. It was then carried aboard the
Tennessee from San Francisco to Panama on Apr. 1, 1851. There are
currently 34 recorded examples of the Honolulu straightline in the Gregory
census (including eight in blue). No. 27 in Gregory's Inaugural Treaty

cover to David Goodale in Marlborough Mass., "San Francisco Cal. 10 Sep."
(1853) circular datestamp, "Paid" straightline, pencil "1oz" weight
notation and "14" rate (two times 6c U.S. plus 2c ship captain's fee),
light pencil docketing "Ellen's letters to Talequah & Framingham, So.
Hadley", minor edge creases and nicks, Very Fine, this was carried on
the E.L. Frost which sailed Nov. 5, 1853, a very rare usage as this
was mailed during a period when both the 13c Missionaries and the
Kamehameha III issues were available to indicate payment, and shortly
before the postmaster at San Francisco required the affixing of U.S.
postage stamps in Honolulu for prepayment, ex Ostheimer and Honolulu

clear "San Francisco Cal. 16 Jan." circular datestamp, "Paid" handstamp and
red crayon "14" rate (two times 6c U.S. plus 2c ship captain's fee), with
original 1853 enclosure from merchant Stephen Reynolds to his daughter
Eveline, he mentions wanting a Daguerreotype of his house and refers to
Eveline's trip to Lake Champlain: ..."a visit to Ticonderoga might
not [have] been without interest, it being the place where your
grandfather was prisoner, in the Revolutionary War and sentenced to be shot
for breaking his parole and escaped by swimming Lake Champlain. We hear
much said about Revolution-annexation. Russian assumption -- French
Invasion -- and many other humbugs relating to the Sandwich Islands which
serve for the amusement of us... You speak of a party here wanting to break
down the King & Chiefs -- and manage the affairs of the Government
themselves... I hope the time is not far distant when the personal property
of every individual will be protected -- it is not so now. Their Laws &c.
read well enough but not well administered." etc., cover with some
