Bluish White (13). Plate 3-A, Type V, Position 5, probably a later
printing, full to large margins, tied by red "POSTAGE PAID" in oval
handstamp (Ty. 762) on large part of cover to "Na Lui Epikopo" at
the Catholic Mission in Honolulu, stamp has faint diagonal crease at bottom
rightVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 2-CENT BLUE
NUMERAL ISSUE TIED ON COVER BY THE RED "POSTAGE PAID" OVAL. Gregory
does not report numbers of covers known for the various Numeral Issues, but
various sources have reported between 10 and 25 covers with the 1859 2c
Blue (all settings). Few covers have the stamp tied by the Honolulu

Grayish White (13a). Plate 3-B, Type IX, Position 10, dropped "I" of
"INTER" variety, large to huge margins except touched at top left,
unusually dark shade, tied by faint blue "Custom House Lahaina Maui"
negative seal with full-rigged ship (Ty. 303, Rarity 1R) on piece
from the Catholic Mission correspondence, gum toning shows thru translucent
paper of stamp, accompanying certificate describes a "diagonal tear" at
bottom, which we think is nothing more than a sharp creaseVERY FINE
APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1859 2-CENT BLUE NUMERAL ISSUE TIED BY

Bluish White (13). Plate 3-B, Type VII, Position 7, separated by hand
with three large margins and clear at bottom, bright shade, tied by red
"POSTAGE PAID" in oval handstamp (Ty. 762) on brown cover to Mr. and
Mrs. Goodale at Honolulu, according to notation based on previous content,
this was sent from the Thurstons at Kailua in January 1860, sender's
endorsement at top "With a Box from Kailua. Freight Paid."AN
EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE COVER BEARING THE HAWAIIAN 1859 2-CENT BLUE NUMERAL
TIED ON ARRIVAL AT HONOLULU The notation on this cover and the cover
in the lot 4065 indicate that mail was carried with cargo. The ship's
captain accepted both and brought the letters to the post office on arrival
in Honolulu, where the stamp was cancelled. Inter-island mail was carried
free prior to August 1, 1859. Ex Emerson, Caspary, Middendorf and
Honolulu Advertiser. Scott value for No. 13 on cover is $10,500.00.

shade, large margins, cancelled by crossed wavy lines in pencil, not tied
but properly used on cover from the Thurstons in Kailua to Warren Goodale
at Honolulu, sender's endorsement "By the Kamehameha 4th With a Box of
Oranges", notation indicates previous contents were datelined at
Kailua, October 4, 1859, small piece missing at upper left from opening
(mended), slight edge nick at upper right into margin of stamp but well
