June 28th 1849" to Waterbury Conn. in "U.S. of America", ms.
"1849" year date, some edgewear and minor strengthening along folds with
tapeVERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE COVER WITH THE FIRST
HANDSTAMPED POSTMARK USED AT SAN FRANCISCO. This San Francisco marking
is recorded on covers dated from June 20 to August 1, 1849. Although
written from California, the sender addressed the letter to the "U.S. of

1849/PAID/40. Two-line handstamp with attached rate (Williams SAC-2470)
clearly struck on blue folded letter to Elk Grove Ill., ms. "40" at top
right, some wear incl. edge flaws and some splitting reinforced by
hingesVERY FINE. ONE OF THE CLEAREST OF THE FIVE OR SO KNOWN STRIKES
OF THIS RARE SACRAMENTO YEAR-DATED STRAIGHTLINE WITH 40-CENT
RATE. This is the earliest of the five or so reported examples of the
Sacramento straightline, which is known used from October 21 thru November
