844 PSE imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1941 German POW Postcard with Greek Red Cross and Swiss Red Cross cachets both in rosine plus German & Sydney censor handstamps, to "Mrs DE Whisker/Police Station/Norfolk Island" advising of the sender's capture, with Geneva machine transit of 24VII/1941, light vertical bend & minor blemishes. Rare: we know of only one other POW item to Norfolk Island, a later card from the same correspondence, that sold at our auction of 10.4.2010 for $1690. In 1927, a federal police station was established on the island. From at least 1939, Kenneth Cook Whisker, the addressee's husband, was the Norfolk Island constable. The writer, Walter Godfrey Stubbing, was Mrs Whisker's son. He had enlisted in the New Zealand Forces & was captured in Greece (probably on Crete?).  [The illustration is above Lot 842]

Air Force cds used at the Norfolk Island airfield, endorsed in pencil on reverse "Last day of RNZAF PO in Norfolk Island", light central fold, opened a little roughly at top & minor aging marks. 854 og/nh image1901-05 British New Guinea Watermark Horizontal Thick Paper 1/- black & bright orange SG 7, full vibrant colour, exceptional centring, the upper units are lightly mounted and the lower units are unmounted, Cat £340++, for mounted singles. Superb. Most examples of the BNG 1/- show varying degrees of oxidation, that affects the orange and, in extreme cases, renders it black!

855 og image1907 Small 'Papua' Overprints Watermark Horizontal Thick Paper 2/6d black & brown as SG 37 but with the Overprint Significantly Misplaced to the Left, marginal block of 4 from the left of the sheet, light tropicalisation of the gum which is a characteristic of the issue, Cat £200+, for normal singles. We don't recall having seen such a pronounced shift of the overprint.
