1071 c imageIRELAND: 1662 entire from an educated English woman "for my very Loving/housband Mr nicklas/Loftus this give at doblin" written in Olde English in a remarkably legible hand with some marvellously idiosyncratic spelling & most numbers being rendered in Roman numerals, dated at the end "Fetherd the ix of iune 1662" and signed "margret Loftus", characteristic folds with minor archival tape reinforcing & some light soiling. Historically significant document, detailing the gathering of tithes for the "New Church" (ie Church of England), a burden that largely fell on the predominantly Catholic population. Fethard, in Co Tipperary, was founded during the Norman invasion of Ireland in the 13th century. The addressee, Nicholas Loftus, was from a well-connected family. He had been a Treasury official and MP for both Fethard and Wexford. [Here's an example of the delightful text: "...in a taned lether bag ther is of plat pisses viih with viid to make it up mor in that bag of iiii & vip pices...", which approximates to "...in a tanned leather bag, there is of plate pieces 7h [shillings?] with 7d to make it up. More in that bag of 4d & 6d pieces..."]

1072 c imageIRELAND: 1922 (Sep) cover with British 1½d tied by indistinct cds, to Dublin endorsed "over/1oz" with '1D' handstamp & British Postage Due 1d tied by light Dublin cds of 30SP/22. At the height of the Irish Civil War, postal workers went on strike protesting against pay cuts. Action began on 10.9.1922, the government claiming that it threatened the very existence of the new Irish Free State, and taking hard-line action against the "rebels". The strike collapsed on 29.9.1922. This cover was processed at Dublin on the first day after the strike was called-off. British Postage Dues remained in use until the first Irish issue in 1925.
