13 October 1898 Carolina Telegraph mark Provisional, mostly bold strike in violet as provisional postage 5c franking on cover to Rio Piedras, addressed to Capt. Scott, Troop H, 6th Cavalry on the same day it was occupied by American troops, blue "Carolina/Pto. Rico/13 Oct. 99" dispatch c.d.s. and "Rio Piedras/Pto. Rico/14 Oct. 98" arrival postmark repeated as a backstamp, cover with horizontal fold, several opening tears mostly on back but one just affecting the marking, very fine usage showing civilian mail using the Spanish postal system; the only known example; ex-Tows. 14 October 1898 Rio Piedras Telegraph mark Provisional, clear strike in violet as provisional postage 5c franking on cover to San Juan while still in Spanish hands, sent two days after Rio Piedras was occupied by American troops, initially a postage due "T" in circle was applied, but then over struck with "Rio Piedras/Pto. Rico/14 Oct. 98" datestamp, with c.d.s. repeated to the right, fresh and extremely fine; this usage shows military mail using the Spanish postal system as the Rio Piedras Military Station did not open until 1 January 1899, one of only three known examples. 17 October 1898 Transfer Day commemorative cover, ten values from ½m to 80c from the 1890-97 Alfonso XIII issued overprinted by local postal clerks to commemorate the last day of Spanish control over the island with violet boxed "Habilitado/17/Octubre/1898" handstamp (10c with an inverted overprint) and tied to registered cover by six strikes of "Admon. Central/Puerto Rico/17 Oct. 98" postmarks, backstamped, extremely fine; these stamps were sold only in San Juan on 17 Oct. and the morning of the 18th, despite being philatelic, this is the only known cover; Graus certificate. 16 January 1899 cover with U.S. postage cancelled by Spanish device, soldier's cover to Greenville, N.J. franked by 5c Dark blue (#281) tied by segment cork cancel, with "Cayey/Pto. Rico/16 Ene. 99" Spanish provisional datestamp along side, San Juan Military Station and Jersey City backstamps, fine and scarce; the area of Cayey was occupied by American troops on 1st December 1898, but a postal station did not open until the 1st May, 1900. May 1899 cover from Mayaguez to Hamburg via steamship Hercynia, franked with U.S. 10c Dark green (#273) and pair Porto Rico 5c Dark blue (#212) cancelled by ms. "X"s, purple straightline "HERCYNIA" and circular "Aus West Indien - Uber Koln" handstamps, backstamped in Hamburg on 23rd May, ink erosion in the address panel, fine; nice usage showing civilian mails bypassing the military postal system as the letter must have been delivered to the ship's captain who accepted it as franked, the only known cover sent on a German steamer during this period. Balance of the Acevedo Puerto Rico in the Spanish American War collection, 47 covers or fronts mounted on exhibition pages and loose, starts with a strong showing of the numbered Military Station postmarks, with Ponce Sta. No. 1 (5) including two provisional railway datestamps, Guayama Sta. No. 2 (2), Mayaguez Sta. No. 3 (2), San Juan Sta. No. 4 (7), including two with provisional railway postmarks, one of which has Puerto Rico stamps partially peeled away, Coamo Sta. No. 5 and Yauco Sta. No. 7 (2), then a front with Habilitado stamps to Spain from Spanish controlled San Juan, a range of town cancels including Spanish Junco, Anasco, Isabela, Maricao, Port Royal and much more, ends with illegal use of 8c and 10c "Porto Rico" overprints on registered cover from San Francisco to Panama, some usual stamp and cover faults, much is fine-very fine; a nice basis for expansion.
