1851 Petit Bourg unpaid stampless entire letter to France, exceedingly rare "Petit-Bourg/Guadeloupe/28 MARS 1851" double-circle c.d.s. on entire folded letter with similar Basse Terre transit c.d.s. on the reverse, carried per British packet via England with London transit on the reverse and red Calais entry transit plus boxed Article 13 handstamp, "15" handstamp for 15 decimes (1Fr50c) due for a single rate letter, backstamped Delle, very fine and handsome; this letter was posted in the same year, but just prior, to issuance of French stamps in the colony; an amazingly rare posting from the small village of Petit Bourg on the east coast of Basse Terre and not listed in Jamet; ex-Grabowski. 1854 Grand Bourg paid stampless cover to France, black "Grand-Bourg (Mie. Gte.)/Guadeloupe/9 MARS 1854" double-circle c.d.s. on folded cover to Marseilles, similar Basse Terre transit c.d.s. over the letter seal on the reverse, this single-rate cover was paid in cash with boxed "PD" handstamp on the front and the black "12" rate handstamp on the reverse, via British packet with red entry transit, backstamped, very fine; though stamps were no longer available this cover establishes that letters could be pre-paid by the sender in this period; this large format postmark of Grand Bourg on the small island of Marie Galante is quite rare; rated scarcity 5 in Jamet with only a few examples recorded; ex-Grabowski. French Colonies Yvert #1, 1862 1c Olive green on pale blue, two horizontal pairs, both very attractive with just clear to large margins all around, in sole franking on 1871 entire prices current to Demerara (British Guiana) paying the local printed matter rate, "Price Currt." in manuscript above the stamps which are just tied by black lozenge cancel with black "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/16 MAI 71" double-circle c.d.s. below, given to the British Agency for transmission to this British Colony but not marked paid as there was no agreement with the British Agency to pre-pay printed matter, small red British "Guadaloupe/MY 17 71" c.d.s. on the reverse and similar Demerara backstamp, large "1" handstamp applied on arrival for 1p due, exceptionally fresh and attractive, choice very fine; printed matter mail is among the rarest type of mail to acquire because it was usually thrown away, this example is amazingly rare not only because there was so little of it saved, but because there was no agreement between the French and the British Agency for sending such mail so prepayment was not possible; only three such printed matter covers are known sent through the British Agency, the other two are each franked with an incorrect 5c Green; this is the only recorded example correctly franked with the proper 4c rate for the local postage and a great rarity in this remarkably select quality; ex-Grabowski. French Colonies Yvert #2, 3, 4, 1859-65, 5c Yellow green on greenish, 10c Bister on yellowish and 20c Blue on bluish, singles of each including two examples of the 5c, large margins to just in on one side of the 10c and 20c, an exceptionally attractive three-color franking paying the reduced rate to New Orleans, tied to folded cover by black 7x7 point lozenge cancels, with a black "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/12 MARS 67" double-circle c.d.s., light, but clear, strike of the very rare "Paid/at/Guadaloupe" Crowned-circle handstamp of the British Agency, "4" pence British rate marking in red crayon, red British "Guadaloupe/MR 13 1867" double-arc c.d.s. and small black St. Thomas transit c.d.s. on the reverse, small black "Steamship/10" circular entry handstamp on arrival in the United States for 10c ship fee due, light vertical file folds affecting the two 5c values but not affecting the very fine appearance of this cover; a lovely cover with considerable eye appeal as well as an extremely rare Crowned-circle paid cover to the United States via the British Agency; ex-Grabowski. French Colonies Yvert #3, 5, 1859 10c Bister on yellowish and 40c Orange on yellowish, single of former and horizontal pair and strip of four of latter, being an impressive franking on 1865 double-rate cover to Philadelphia, the pair and the strip have full large margins all around, the stamps are cancelled by black lozenge cancels with a black "Pointe-a-Pitre/Guadeloupe/10 AVR 1865" rimless c.d.s. tying the strip, fairly well struck "Paid/at/Guadaloupe" Crowned-circle handstamp of the British Agency, "2/-" British rate marking in red crayon, portions of red British "Guadaloupe/AP 11 1865" double-arc c.d.s. and small black St. Thomas c.d.s. on the reverse, black "Steamship/20" entry handstamp on arrival in the United States, red "PD" boxed handstamp obliterated by black lozenge cancel as the cover was not completely pre-paid, the 20c ship fee being due in the United States, light vertical file fold affecting one stamp each from the pair and the strip, not affecting the exceptional and very fine appearance of this cover; a rare multiple rate cover and possibly the only recorded double-rate cover to the United States via the British Agency; ex-Grabowski. French Colonies Yvert #5, 1859 40c Orange on yellowish, block of twenty being a full two horizontal rows of the sheet with large sheet margins at each side (affixed over edge of cover at one end), plus a strip of four and one stamp lost en route, a most amazing franking being the largest recorded multiple of the 40c on a cover from Guadeloupe, its usage is equally amazing starting out as a 20 times the 50c rate to Paris with stamps tied by lozenge cancels, black "Pointe-a-Pitre/Guadeloupe/28 AOUT 1862" rimless c.d.s., carried via British packet with black Calais entry transit, red boxed "PD" handstamp, backstamped Paris and then forwarded back across the Atlantic to Mexico, in addition to the largely missing stamp there is a piece missing to one stamp and a few other faults in the bottom row of the block, edge wear to cover, not surprising when one considers the size and travels of this envelope, fine; a rare and important postal history rarity of the Eagle issue used in Guadeloupe; ex-Grabowski. French Colonies Yvert #14, 18, 1872-76 1c Olive green on pale blue and 10c Bister on rose, horizontal strip of four and single of former and two singles of latter, the 1c single into the frame in one corner, all the rest with full large even margins, an amazing franking paying a very rare 25c internal rate on 1877 cover to Basse Terre, stamps are tied by five strikes of black "Guadeloupe/Pointe-a-Pitre/25 FEVR. 77" double-circle c.d.s., backstamped Basse Terre the next day, very fine and exceedingly choice; the normal rate for internal mail was 20c but a special rate of 25c existed for a service by sailing ship between the major islands connecting Pointe-a-Pitre, Basse Terre and Grand Bourg on Marie Galante, no special markings exist for this service and it is only recognizable by the rate and the dates of the postmarks; covers exhibiting this rate are extremely rare and the cover offered here is the most spectacular example with this colorful and rare franking; ex-Grabowski. 1883 Grand Bourg unpaid postage due folded letter to France, posted from the smaller Island of Marie Galante with a very rare use of the larger size "Guadeloupe/Grand Bourg (Mie. Gte.)/9 FEVR. 83" double-circle c.d.s. on entire folded letter, a confirming Pointe-a-Pitre transit of the same date on the reverse, 10c Black and 40c Black French postage dues (Yvert #15, 19) tied on arrival in Paris by triangular due handstamp paying double the 25c U.P.U. rate, soiling to the back of the cover, very fine; Dubus records that this rare postmark was used from January 1888 to 1892, this cover establishes that it was used far earlier than that; ex-Grabowski.
