Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
161 og 74 image#74, 3c Scarlet, an outstanding mint example of this trial printing rarity, being among the finest quality mint examples with original gum in existence, possessing numerous exceptional physical qualities that are seldom encountered on a single example, including gloriously intense color that does not have the usual "mottled" appearance which typifies most existing copies, plus its impression is deeply incised on fresh paper, remarkably well centered within very large margins that are also most uncharacteristic, full original gum, an extremely fine gem in every respect; very few of the Three Cent Scarlet exist, whether mint or "used" with the characteristic pen stroke cancels, however you can probably count on less than two hands the number of examples that exist mint both with original gum and in sound condition, the number that exist in this premium condition as well is quite miniscule; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 7,000.00

Closed or SOLD for $8,750.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
162 O 74a image#74a, 3c Scarlet, imperforate, a striking bottom left corner sheet-margin example, with huge sheet margins and the other margins being quite large, stamp with central manuscript "J.M./ Jan. 31/ 1868" in three lines, thought by students of this rarity to be in the hand of James Macdonough, one of the founders of the National Bank Note Company, with color, impression and paper exactly as found on the existing perforated examples of this trial printing, some creasing of little importance considering the near unique nature of this remarkable imperforate, extremely fine appearance; one of only three recorded Three Cent Scarlets with the manuscript initials and date, one of which is perforated, the other two being imperforate; 1999 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 10,000-15,000

Closed or SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
163 O 75 image#75, 5c Red brown, a superb used example that is one of the very finest used copies of the Five Cent Red brown we have ever offered, possessing perfect centering amid lavishly large margins that are most uncommon to this value, with no portion of the stamp's design being impinged by its perforations, incredibly deep rich color and impression on bright paper, attractively postmarked with both a black target and red transit cancel, extremely fine; a true condition rarity in this gem condition; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 485.00

Closed or SOLD for $1,000.00
Closing..Oct-23, 06:00 PM
164 og 76 image#76, 5c Brown, pristine mint single, possessing an uncommon overall freshness and crispness, rich luxuriant color and a sharp impression, wonderfully well centered, particularly for the issue, full o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine for this; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 1,100.00

167 O 78 image#78, 24c Lilac, beautifully centered within margins that are uncharacteristically large for any of the various Twenty Four Cent 1861-63 issues, remarkably intense color and an excellent clarity of impression on bright white paper, fully intact perforations surround the whole, crisp neat strike of target postmark, extremely fine; very scarce in this choice used condition; 1992 PF certificate. 170 O 78c image#78c, 24c Blackish violet, a spectacular used example of one of the rarest and most elusive of all the famous shade varieties found on any 19th century U.S. stamp, being far more difficult to find than the 1857 Indian red, 1861 Pigeon blood pink or 1862 24c Violet, featuring outstanding centering amid unusually wide margins, strong unmistakable blackish violet color and a well defined impression on bright paper, central cork postmark, extremely fine; given the fact that there are only two or three known mint examples of this rare color variety, a used example seems to be an excellent alternative for most collectors, particularly in this premium condition; 1996 PF certificate. (Image) 2,000.00

Closed or SOLD for $6,500.00

1867 Grilled Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
171 og 79 image#79, 3c Rose, "A" grill, a most remarkable quality mint example of this impossibly difficult stamp, not only being in sound condition, which is almost unheard of on this all-over grill, but it possesses outstanding physical qualities as well, incredibly bright and fresh, with rich luxuriant color and a much stronger impression than usual, well centered, full clean o.g. that shows just the barest suggestion of hinging, a few perforations at right have been slightly "improved" essentially to even them out, quite understandable considering this stamp's notorious history of being found with rough or torn away perforations due to the overall grill weakening the paper, a very fine and choice stamp; one of the finest original gum examples of the Three Cent "A" Grill in existence; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 4,750.00

(Image) 4,750.00

(Image) 2,750.00

(Image) 1,000.00
