Scott, Dickey's Company, Elmore's Regiment, Galveston (Texas), fascinating contents concerning writer's interest in making salt by evaporation from Gulf salt water, the construction of 500 largewater tight boxes mentioned, "I think I can make 15,000# of salt per month with eight negroes to help me. Be sure the water you experiment with is taken from the Gulf instead of the Bay... If you find that four gallons contains a pound of salt, and can get the boxes made for not exceeding $10.00 each, write to A.J. Burke & Co., Houston and they will send you the lumber and nails.", inconsequential soiling to exterior only, a very fine and historically interesting item which details the wartime entrepreneurial spirit which existed in the South. 1490 c imageSan Antonio, Tex. / May 16 (1864) transit c.d.s. with matching "10" above, Shreveport, La. "Due 10" handstamp at upper right, on small soldier's cover addressed to Mrs. S. Wright, Nueces Town, Nueces County, Texas, historically significant two page enclosure from William J. Wright dated April 20th 1864, written to his mother on a military form, describing in vivid detail the recent events of the Battle of Mansfield (La), "we fell back and drew the Yanks into a good place and on Friday the 8th we fought the Battle of Mansfield and routed Gen. Banks capturing 21 pieces of artilery, 180 waggons, 250 prisoners, horses, mules and small arms and drove them back double quick", he continues discussing action on the next day, "we caught them one mile above this place at 3 o'clock and fought the Battle of Pleasant Hill. The Yanks had 27,000 men fresh in this fight but we drove back their right with dismounted Cavalry more than a mile."; about 50 miles south of Shreveport when written, this letter was routed north through that city which accounts for the original due marking, then was sent to San Antonio which was the closest large town to Nueces; various small stains to cover only, still very fine; a fascinating and important correspondence which explicitly chronicles one of the few great Southern victories in the Western theater of operations. 1498 c Texas Confederate Period balance of the Bleuler Collection, consisting of 32 covers, all with interesting small town markings, enclosures or related soldier correspondence, we note towns such as Alto, Carthage, Shelbyville, Bastrop, Brenham, Wheelock, Yorktown and Hopkinsville, at least eight enclosures (several military related), six items franked with regular issues (mostly #11 or #12), including two wallpaper covers, several inbound covers from Arkansas and Louisiana with Texas transit markings (from Texas soldiers) and one Confederate use of U.S. stamps, faults will be found on some, however much nicer than usual for these, as most were selected for their interesting correspondence or usages, many fine and very fine; a unique opportunity for the Texas CSA collector.
