U125 |
#U125, 2c Brown on orange, die 48, size 10. knife
53u, wmk. 2, mint "Centennial" entire, marvelously bright and fresh, with
strong color and embossing, very fine and quite choice; an important
postal stationery rarity, as our records indicate that only three such
entires exist; in fact, this is the third of the three we have had the
privilege to sell in our auctions, the first was in April 1998 as part of
the Dr. J. Paul Wampler collection (also ex-Cole), it was the smaller size
7 and realized $35,750.00; the second, in size 10 (as is this entire), was
first offered by Shreves in June 1998 as part of the "Michigan" collection
(also ex-White) realizing $33,000.00, and was subsequently resold by this
firm as part of the magnificent William S. Floyd collection in October
2001, realizing once again $33,000.00; now with this offering of the third
recorded entire, this may very well be the last opportunity for many years
for the serious postal stationery collector to obtain one of the key
rarities of the field; ex-Mason and Barkhausen (UPSS #300). (Image) |
