United States Stamps continued...

1875 Re-Issues of the 1869 Pictorials continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
241 og 124 image#124, 2c Brown re-issue, an incredibly choice mint example, possessing outstanding centering amid uncharacteristically large margins, sumptuously rich color and a crisp detailed impression on bright paper, full o.g., lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem; 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 700.00

SOLD for $2,200.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
242 og 125 image#125, 3c Blue re-issue, an exceptional mint example of this very rare and difficult value, being in a quality that is far superior to the vast majority of known examples, possessing an extraordinary overall freshness and brilliance, with gloriously rich color and a razor-sharp impression on immaculately white paper, remarkably well centered within large margins for this, especially clean full o.g. that has been lightly hinged, extremely fine; certainly among the finest available of the 1,406 issued; the Three Cent Pictorial Re-issue is, by far, the most challenging of all the 1875 re-issues to obtain in premium original gum condition; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 5,250.00

SOLD for $6,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
243 O 125 image#125, 3c Blue re-issue, an incredibly rare premium quality used example of this stamp, the most elusive of the 1869 Pictorial Re-issue series in used condition, wonderfully well centered within large margins, rich characteristic re-issue color and impression, neat and unobtrusive New York oval grid, extremely fine; one of the great used rarities in United States philately, as only approximately a dozen used examples are known, with this being among the very finest available; most recorded examples are found quite faulty and/or off center; the catalog value quoted in Scott is for "an attractive example with faults.", and bears little relationship to the value of the gem example offered here, as evidenced by the realizations of two comparable premium quality examples which have appeared at auction in the last 3+ years; in October 1998 the extremely fine used example (boldly cancelled) in the Robert Zoellner collection (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.) realized $65,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, while another choice copy (centered a bit to right) realized $62,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, in the 2001 "Rarities of the World" Sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.); the Lessin example is every bit the equal to, if not finer than, the two aforementioned copies and has not been offered on the auction market in over a decade; 1991 PF certificate; ex-Keightley. (Image) 15,000.00

SOLD for $42,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM

Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
245 O 126 image#126, 6c Blue re-issue, an exciting used example of this very rare stamp, in all likelihood being the finest known used Six Cent 1869 Pictorial Re-issue, possessing exceptional centering amid uncharacteristically large margins, intense re-issue color and impression on bright fresh paper, neatly and unobtrusively cancelled with a segmented circular postmark, extremely fine; far more elusive used than mint, despite their inexplicable parity in catalog value; 1996 PF certificate. 249 O 128 image#128, 12c Green re-issue, a fabulous quality example of this very rare used re-issue, being in a condition that is virtually unheard of on any of the known used 1869 Pictorial Re-issues, magnificently centered amid lavishly large margins, eye-arresting color in an incredibly deep shade, plus its impression is deeply etched on bright paper, superbly postmarked with a light magenta cancel at bottom, leaving the central vignette cancel free, a superb stamp for the finest used collection; Jon Rose, in his exceptional United States Postage Stamps of 1869 handbook, estimates that only 15-25 used Twelve Cent Re-issues exist and, in our opinion, there exists no finer than the Lessin copy offered here; 1991 PF certificate; ex-Morris.
