1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
332 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, sumptuously rich color on fresh paper, three very wide margins, centered a bit to bottom as a number of these are found, completely free of the faults which plague the majority of known examples, very fine; a choice and sound example of this enormously rare stamp of which approximately 30 to 40 are known; it is estimated that less than half of the existing One Cent Soft Paper Special Printings are sound, and of this elite group very few are known with very fine or better centering; 1966 PF certificate; ex-"Country Gentleman" collection. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $16,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
333 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, an outstanding example of this truly rare special printing, featuring exceptional centering that is far superior to the vast majority of known examples, strikingly intense color and impression, extremely fine; among the finest existing examples of the approximately 50 to 60 copies still believed to exist; 1960 PF certificate; ex-Caspary. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $14,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
334 og 194 image#194, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, marvelously fresh, with sumptuously rich characteristic color and a highly detailed impression on bright clean paper, centered just slightly to right as are most of the known examples, however this is much better centered than nearly all others, completely free of any flaws which affect most surviving copies, choice very fine. A magnificent example of one of the rarest and most difficult of all Bank Note Special Printings, with perhaps fewer than 20 still believed to exist (only 12 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation). This particular example is considered to be the finest known #194 in terms of its overall quality. There are a couple examples which have slightly better centering, but each of these have thins. It is interesting to note that virtually every time one encounters a great collection of United States stamps, the one stamp that is missing out of all the Special Printings is the Three Cent Soft Paper Bank Note. When an example of this stamp makes an infrequent appearance at auction, it always attracts not only considerable bidder attention, but impressive price levels as well. The last sound example appeared in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection. It was centered a bit more strongly to the right, just clearing the perforations, and realized $42,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. We fully expect that the Lessin example, being in the ultimate available quality, will certainly eclipse the Floyd realization. Accompanied by 1948, 1967 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-Lilly and Kantor. (Image) 32,500.00

SOLD for $67,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
335 og 195 image#195, 6c Dull rose special printing, without gum as issued, a handsome and choice example of this very rare and terribly challenging value to find in premium condition, being attractively centered within exceptionally wide margins, warm characteristic color, very fine; one of the few existing sound and well centered examples, with no more than 30 copies believed to still exist and, to our knowledge, there exists no perfectly centered examples, in fact few exist with superior centering and margins to the example offered here; 1952 PF certificate; ex-Kharasch. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $15,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
336 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, gorgeous vibrant color on bright paper, extraordinarily well centered amid lavishly large margins, small natural wood pulp inclusion at bottom right (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), still extremely fine and handsome; probably less than 100 copies exist of this value; 1973 PF certificate. (Image) 3,500.00

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
337 og 197 image#197, 10c Deep brown special printing, without gum as issued, a gem example of this important Special Printing rarity, magnificently well centered within very large margins, sumptuously rich color and an incredibly detailed impression on immaculate paper, completely free of the faults that plague most known copies, extremely fine; unquestionably one of the very finest of the fewer than 30 known examples; the catalog value of this stamp bears little relationship to the true market value of a copy in such outstanding quality, for example the last two premium quality copies which appeared at auction have each realized $35,750.00 (William S. Floyd Sale, Shreves Philatelic Galleries, Inc., October 2001; and Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc., Sale #843, February 2002); 1960 and 1999 PF certificates. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $35,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
338 og 198 image#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, attractive example of this rarity of which probably fewer than 75 copies still exist, nicely centered, rich luxuriant color, very fine for this difficult value; 1959 PF certificate. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $4,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
339 og 199 image#199, 15c Orange special printing, without gum as issued, a fabulous quality example of this immensely rare stamp, magnificently centered within extravagantly large margins, additionally this stunning stamp's color could not be more vivid and luxurious, nor its impression more deeply etched on bright fresh paper, extremely fine in every regard; approximately 30 copies are thought to exist of this rarity, with this being among the very finest available; 1953 PF certificate. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $26,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
340 og 200 image#200, 24c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, deep luxuriant color, centered to top right, a fine example of a stamp that is believed to exist in a quantity of less than 75 copies; 1967 PF certificate. (Image) 5,000.00
