surcharge, an immensely rare mint cut square, measuring 43x41mm,
wonderfully bright and fresh, extremely fine; one of the greatest postal
stationery rarities in existence, as it is believed that there may be only
two or three (at most) in existence, and this may well be the first example
to be ever offered at public auction; the rarity of this cut square can
easily be documented by both its lack of appearance in even the most
advanced collections and in any auction of recent memory, in fact, the
Scott catalog years ago decided to take out any reference to value simply
because this item never traded hands at auction or even privately to their
knowledge, we did find a catalog value of $1,250.00 back in the 1988
edition of the Scott catalog, and similarly priced items at the time now
routinely realize $15,000.00 to $30,000.00 or more; the appearance of this
cut square at auction is truly a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity for the
serious collector of United States cut squares; signed "RAC" (Richard A.
Champagne) and accompanied by a 1997 PSE certificate.
