2 og 1 image#1, 5c Red brown, a magnificent quality mint example, being in a condition that is far superior to the vast majority of known mint copies of this classic, possessing extraordinary overall physical characteristics, not the least of which is its remarkable overall freshness and brilliance, with beautifully rich color and a sharp detailed impression from an early printing on crisp paper, impressively margined with extra-large margins all around, including a sizable sheet margin at top, incredibly clean full o.g. that has been only very lightly hinged, extremely fine gem; an extraordinarily rare stamp to find in both this superb condition and still retaining its full original gum; the last comparable quality mint example to appear at auction was the Hall example which was sold in the May 2000 "Rarities of the World" Sale (Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.) for $22,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium; 1987 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 6,250.00

6 O 1b image#1b, 5c Brown orange, an especially choice and eye-appealing used example of this scarce and distinctive shade, being the far more elusive shade than the orange brown color which shares the same Scott identification number, gorgeous bright and unmistakable brown orange color, excellent clarity of impression on fresh paper, four large and well balanced margins, beautifully postmarked with a lightly struck blue town c.d.s., extremely fine; a lovely example of the Five Cent Brown orange; 1979 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 1,300.00

SOLD for $1,600.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
7 O 1c image#1c, 5c Red orange, a breathtaking used example of this distinctive color, boasting enormously large margins all all around, showing bits of the frame lines from the adjoining stamps at top and bottom, incredibly rich and unmistakable red orange color on very fresh paper still retaining much of its original bluing, boldly postmarked with a circular grid cancel in deep blue, an extremely fine gem in the most optimal condition possible and quite likely the finest quality used example in existence; any example of this, the rarest of all the Five Cent 1847 colors, is a terribly elusive stamp, and when found they invariably have small faults, very few exist sound, and only a tiny fraction of these are found with with margins that can even compare to those found on this remarkable copy; obviously undercataloged when one considers that this example realized $13,200.00 (including premium) when last sold at auction in 1999; 1994 PF certificate (submitted by Raymond H. Weill Co.); ex-Argentum and Chapin. (Image) 6,000.00

12 O 5 image#5, 1c Blue, Ty. I, position 7R1E, extraordinarily large margins virtually all around, just clear at bottom, being one of the very few existing examples whose design is completely intact all around, wonderfully fresh and distinctive early Plate 1 color, unusually lightly cancelled with a town c.d.s. which reads "24/Ala." at bottom, leaving the important Type I design characteristics completely unobscured, couple of miniscule surface scrapes that are so insignificant as to not even be mentioned on the accompanying certificate, extremely fine. An incredibly choice example of one of the rarest and most sought-after classic United States stamps. One position, the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent imperforate displays. According to The Wagshal Census of 7R1E by Jerome S. Wagshal, there are only 90 confirmed examples of the imperforate Type I, the vast majority of which are used. When one eliminates those found on cover or in multiples, there are a mere 56 single examples available to collectors. Of this population very few are found with the overall eye-appealing characteristics this stamp possesses - most particularly its wide margins displaying a completely intact design. Fewer still have such wonderfully fresh color and are so lightly cancelled. A large majority of the recorded examples of Scott #5 have faults ranging from rather minor to severe. The couple of truly miniscule surface scrapes mentioned above are of no consequence. In fact, this stamp has traded several times in the past without any mention of surface scrapes and the Philatelic Foundation in 1999 (its most recently issued certificate for the stamp) have determined the stamp to be completely sound and issued an unqualified "it is genuine" certificate. In our opinion, this stamp is among the finest examples available of this world-class rarity. ex-Puliafito. (Image) 45,000.00

13 O 5A image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, position 9R1E, a superb used example of this classic rarity, being in a condition that would be quite a challenge to duplicate, featuring exceptionally large margins all around, including a sizable portion of the sheet margin at top, with the design well clear all around, lovely rich and bright early color, with a sharp well-defined impression on immaculate paper, very light and unobtrusive central strike of a circular grid, an extremely fine gem for the most meticulous collector; 2002 PF certificate. (Image) 6,750.00

14 O 5A image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, position 4R1E, gem used example of this very rare type, possessing extraordinarily large and even margins all around which are quite uncharacteristic to most existing examples, including a portion of the sheet margin at top, distinctive early color and impression on wonderfully bright paper, very light and unobtrusive town c.d.s. confined to top right, extremely fine in every regard; plated and signed on reverse by Stanley B. Ashbrook; ex-Chapin. (Image) 6,750.00

15 O 7, 5A image#7, 5A, 1c Blue, Ty. II and Ib combination pair, positions 2-3R1E, premium quality used example of this exceedingly rare combination pair, the left stamp being Ty. II, while the right stamp is the elusive Ty. Ib, large and well balanced margins all around, warm rich color distinctive to plate one early stamps and well defined impressions on bright paper, central grid postmarks, extremely fine; plate one early produced only six possible Ty. Ib positions, all from the top row of the pane, the other four positions consist of three Ty. II's and, of course, the famous Ty. I, position 7R1E, only two places from the top row could produce the Ty. Ib and Ty. II combination, positions 9-10R1E and positions 2-3R1E, the latter with the Ty. Ib being the right stamp as is found in this pair, making this one of the rarest of all possible One Cent Blue imperforate combinations, and this particular pair is believed to be the finest of the few Ty. II and Ty. Ib combination pairs in existence; the rarity of this particular combination is underscored by the fact that it is unlisted in the Scott catalog; 1976 PF certificate (accompanied by a 1995 letter from the PF clarifying the positions on the pair); ex-Chapin. (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $10,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
16 O 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, especially handsome used example of this important classic rarity, with large margins nearly all around, just touching at bottom, although all-important plumes virtually intact, rich luxuriant color and an especially detailed impression on bright paper, light strike of town c.d.s., completely free of any of the flaws which affect a large portion of the existing copies, very fine; the extreme rarity of Type Ia stamps is due to the fact that only 18 of the 20 positions on the bottom row of plate 4 sheets (200 subjects) produced this distinctive type, which shows a full design at bottom; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $5,250.00

17 O 6, 8A image#8A, 6, 1c Blue, Ty. IIIa and Ia combination pair, positions 90/100L4, vertical pair with the bottom stamp being the very rare Ty. Ia, an extraordinary quality example of this seldom seen combination pair, featuring ample to large margins nearly all around (just touching design at a few points on bottom stamp), spectacularly intense color and a prooflike impression enhance this pair's overall eye-appeal, bright fresh paper, superbly postmarked with a Bristol town c.d.s. and matching rimless grid, very fine; terribly undercataloged, in our opinion, as the Scott catalog only gives this combination pair a 10% premium over the price of the two single stamps; 1964 PF certificate; ex-Newbury and Chapin. (Image) 12,250.00

SOLD for $12,500.00

18 O 6b, 6 image#6b, 6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ic and Ia combination pair, positions 91-92R4, horizontal pair, a spectacular quality used example of this immensely rare combination pair, the left stamp being Ty. Ic from position 91R4, the position which produced the finest example of this elusive and distinctive subtype of Ty. Ia (bottom right plum not as complete as found on Ty. Ia), while the right stamp is the rare Ty. Ia showing full plumes at bottom, featuring large margins all around which allow all the type characteristics on both stamps to show completely, deep rich Plate 4 color and a bold detailed impression on fresh paper, July 12 town c.d.s., extremely fine; this gem pair ranks among the most important of all the known combination pairs of the One Cent Blue imperforate, not only due to its extraordinary quality, but for the remarkable combination of the two types in the same pair, only possible in two places on the bottom row of Plate 4; listed but unpriced in Scott as this combination pair, cataloged simply as used singles of Scott #6 and #6b; 1946 and 2002 PF certificates. (Image) as singles 16,500.00+

19 O 6b image#6b, 1c Blue, Ty. Ic, position 89R4, a superb used example of this rare and distinctive type, featuring lavishly large and perfectly balanced margins all around, gloriously rich color and an excellent clarity of impression on immaculate paper, wonderfully postmarked by a light town c.d.s., an extremely fine gem for the collector who seeks out used classics in only the finest available quality; the rarity of Ty. Ic stamps is due to the fact that only ten such types are found on the 200 positions from plate 4 and does not occur on any other plate; this extraordinary stamp is such a superlative example of a Ty. Ic it has been illustrated both in Ashbrook (page 243) and Brookman (page 118); 1971 PF certificate; ex-Kharasch and Chapin. (Image) 1,600.00
