S.G. #4, 9, 1864-71 1p Green and 6p Vermilion, both perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, horizontal strip of three of the 1p Green in an unusually thick paper variety, and horizontal pair of the 6p Vermilion in a deep shade, both on front of petite 1872 registered cover to London, central "A15" in bars oval cancels, while not tying the stamps, the cancels are impressed strongly enough to impress the envelope (apparently there was a stamp removed at bottom left and another stamp that does not belong has been hinged in place), on the front is also a light but quite clear strike of the rare red "Registered" straight line handstamp, "Grenada/FE 08 72" c.d.s. with index letter "A" on the reverse, London receiving handstamps on front and back, name in the address has been eradicated scuffing the cover, otherwise very fine appearance and rare usage; only three covers are known with this registry handstamp (Scott #3, 5). S.G. #6, 1863 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, mint horizontal pair, fresh bright color in one of the lighter rose shades, quite well centered for this early issue, o.g., couple of trivial stains that are barely noticeable, otherwise very fine; unused multiples of this value in any of the colors that were issued between 1863 and 1871 are of the greatest rarity, a total of only seven such multiples are recorded (Scott #4; $1,400.00+). S.G. #6, 1863 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk small star, an incredibly well centered horizontal pair with strong rose color, on pristine 1868 mourning cover paying the packet rate to Britain, with "A15" in bars oval cancels and tied by red London "Paid" c.d.s., on the reverse is clear "Grenada/JU 25 68" small c.d.s. with index letter "A" and backstamped "Aberdeen, Scotland", extremely fine cover and usage; covers of such high quality are rarely found from this early stamp period of Grenada; ex-Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #4). S.G. #6, 1863 6p Rose, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. small star, attractive and quite well centered horizontal pair, just tied to 1864 cover to Glasgow by single strike of "A15" in bars oval cancel, small "Grenada/AU 23 64" c.d.s. with index letter "A" on the reverse, red London transit, backstamped Glasgow, light cover soiling and small edge tear to cover at left, otherwise very fine; the transatlantic rate to Britain was raised from 6p to 1/- in April of 1863, since no 1/- stamps were issued by Grenada until 1875 pairs of the 6p were used to fill the void; a nice example of this usage. S.G. #8, 1863 6p Dull rose red, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk. sideways small star, horizontal pair showing the delicate nuances of this scarce shade, centered a bit into the design at right with slight gum stains on the perfs., on 1871 folded cover to London, not tied but clearly proper to the cover, red London "Paid receiving c.d.s. on the front and light "Grenada/MR 10 71" small c.d.s. with index letter "A" on the reverse across the letterjoin; attractive and very fine cover; pairs of the 6p are the most common usage being the rate to Britain, however this particular issue is exceptionally scarce on cover and very few examples are found in the major collections of Grenada. S.G. #9, 10, 1873 6p Vermilion, rough perf. 14 to 16, wmk small star, horizontal pair along with 1p Green single with clean cut perf. 15, tied to 1875 folded cover to London by indistinct "D/Jan 28/1875" c.d.s. of Grenville, small Grenada transit on the reverse and red London Paid receiving c.d.s. on the front, accompanying 2002 BPA certificate states extensively restored which we think is unduly harsh as it consists largely of the reinforcement of a horizontal file fold that is well clear of the stamps and markings as described in the Russell Jones sale, and perhaps a mild cleaning of the front of the cover, very fine appearance; this franking is rare with only three examples recorded, all from the same correspondence in having an additional 1p franking over the 1/- packet rate to pay inland postage from on outlying post office to St. George's, mail originating at St. Georges only needed the 1/-; 2002 BPA certificate; ex-Towers (Scott #5, 5B). S.G. #11, 12, 1873-74 1p Blue green and 6p Orange vermilion, both intermediate perf. 15, wmk. large star, 1p with sideways wmk. and rounded corner perf., tied to lovely and rare mourning cover to France by clear "D/May 10 1874" c.d.s. of Grenville, small Grenada and red London Paid transits on the front and several French transits and backstamps on the reverse, very fine and attractive; a most unusual franking which appears to have been accepted underfranked, the Grenada post office seems to have had difficulty knowing how to frank covers to France, prior to the packet rate change in 1863 covers to France were charged 8p, after that we have three covers each from the General Post Office and the parish post offices with the use of bisects rated between 8p and 1/1 1/2, this one is rated much like a parish post office postings to one of the other West Indies islands, regardless there is no evidence from cancels or otherwise that stamps are missing making this an extremely rare as well as a beautiful cover; ex-Messenger and Hackmey, featured in these sales as a lovely cover with no mention of the rate discrepancy (Scott #6, 7). S.G. #11b, 1874 1p Blue green, intermediate perf. 15, wmk. sideways large star, diagonal bisect in pair with single, on piece of St. George's Chronicle and Grenada Gazette, tied by "D/Feb 26/1874" c.d.s. of Grenville, stamps are well centered and bisect is very well tied, small edge tears to piece, fine and scarce; this piece illustrates the legitimate authorized bisecting to meet the 1 1/2p newspaper rate to Great Britain that resulted when the paper was posted from an outlying parish post office (1/2p from Grenville to St. George's plus 1p transatlantic newspaper rate to Britain), bisecting was necessary because there were no 1/2p stamps issued until 1881, this particular issue is listed but unpriced, similar priced issues of the period are all valued at over £6,000 on cover in Stanley Gibbons (Scott #6; $7,500.00 on cover).
