UPSS #1a |
#UPSS #1a, 3c Red on white horizontally laid
paper, die 1, size 2, knife 2, wmk. 1, with red Nesbitt seal on the
reverse, a used example of this very rare "first" envelope that is only
known used, posted to Millbury, Massachusetts with "Indianapolis, Ind./Dec
6 (1853)/3 Paid" c.d.s., very light vertical fold, plus small piece missing
form lower back flap and light edge soiling, still attractive and nearly
very fine for this; when Nesbitt first went into production of the first
postal envelope, they laid out the envelopes on the paper so that the
watermark and laid lines were horizontal, they soon realized that by laying
out the envelopes on a bias they could obtain more envelopes per sheet,
which is the normal way that envelopes have been produced ever since; these
early printings with horizontal watermark produced in 1853 are extremely
rare with only about 20 examples known; just newly listed in UPSS
and not yet listed in Scott (Scott #1 var.).
