Shreves Philatelic Galleries, Inc. Sale - 75

The "Alpha" Collection - February 16, 2006

The gold-medal "Alpha" collection is the finest and most comprehensive collection of Washington-Franklin era covers ever formed - even surpassing the legendary Siskin collection, which was dispersed in 1989. Even more remarkable is the fact that every cover (and some important off-cover stamps) offered in The "Alpha" Collection auction has been well researched and authenticated as the earliest documented usage. This is, by far, the largest assemblage of these exceedingly rare and desirable usages ever presented in a single auction.

This extraordinary auction will appeal to specialists in many different fields such as: first day and earliest documented usages, rare rates, destinations and origins. In addition to being all Earliest Documented Usages, many of the covers bear stamps that are rarities themselves on any cover, let alone being an EDU – such as the 1909 Bluish Papers, the Three Cent 1911 "Orangeburg" coil and the only known example of Scott #539 on cover - one of the greatest rarities in U.S. philately. This unique auction concludes with a similarly impressive offering of Earliest Documented Usages of U.S. Postal Stationery.
