The Gary Gilbert Collection - February 17, 2006

The Gary Gilbert Collection is an exceptional collection of certified and graded mint United States postage stamps - totaling 400 lots.

Mr. Gilbert, early on in his collecting, saw that certified United States stamps were becoming extremely popular, as the presence of an independent certificate of authenticity and condition afforded buyers - whether a novice or a seasoned collector - a certain "peace of mind", especially when buying stamps that were purported to be in premium condition. Mr. Gilbert also was among the first collectors to embrace the new "graded" certificate phenomenon, seeking out as many different stamps that he could find that would "grade out" with high numbers, such as 85, 90, 95, 98 and 100. His collection is one of the few auctions that Shreves has ever offered where every single stamp offered is accompanied by a certificate - and many have two or three.
