EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE IIIa WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

Plate 4 perforated stamps seldom have wide margins all around, due to the narrow spacing between the stamps and the difficulty Toppan Carpenter & Co. experienced when perforating was introduced into the process in 1857. The perforations on this stamp are well clear on all four sides, which is quite unusual for the issue. (Image)
