VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DIE ESSAY OF THE ONE-THIRD BARREL VALUE IN THE 1866 SERIES DESIGN TYPE.

The Act of March 2, 1867, authorized the first One-Third Barrel Beer stamp to accommodate brewers west of the Rockies who carried two kegs of this size up the mountains on the backs of mules bound for mining camps. The 1867 Series included a One-Third Barrel value, but the designs were altered by deleting "Stamp" from the curved label above the center. This die essay combines the 1866 design with "Stamp" and 33-1/3c One-Third Barrel value. (Image)
