VERY FINE. A RARE CALVIN COOLIDGE FREE FRANK AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, WHICH IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN.
President and Mrs. Coolidge left the White House shortly after lunch on May 15, 1928 to go to the Old State House in Annapolis Md. to witness a reenactment of George Washington's resignation of his command of the Continental Armies on the 150th anniversary of the event. (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE "FREE FRANK" OF FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT, WHO NEVER HELD THE PRIVILEGE OF SENDING HIS MAILS FREE THROUGH THE POST UNDER HIS SIGNATURE.
The presidential office was of course allowed to send out mail free of charge for official business, using penalty envelopes such as this. However, the signature was not necessary, and the penalty for private use is self-explanatory. Roosevelt died in office and so the free franking privilege exercised by all presidents after leaving office was never exercised. As a philatelist, Roosevelt occasionally prepared items such as this.
