VERY FINE. A RARE BRITISH COLUMBIA AND UNITED STATES MIXED-FRANKING COVER SENT FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND TO CANADA VIA SAN FRANCISCO AND CHICAGO.
The "36" barred numeral cancel is attributed to the post office at Nanaimo, an important town on Vancouver Island, known primarily at this time for its coal and lumber industries. The internal postage was prepaid by the 2-1/2p stamp, and the U.S. 15c rate to Canada for distances over 3,000 miles was paid by the 3c and 12c 1861 stamps. The coat-of-arms handstamp was ordinarily used in lieu of adhesive stamps, but in this case was struck in the same ultramarine ink as the "36" numeral cancel. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE COVER FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND TO ENGLAND VIA SAN FRANCISCO AND NEW YORK, PREPAID AT THE 29-CENT RATE FROM THE WEST COAST TO ENGLAND.
Postage from Vancouver Island was paid in cash. The U.S. franking on this cover pays the 29c rate from the West Coast to England, which was reduced to 24c on Vancouver Island and British Columbia mail about one month later. (Image)
