30c Orange (71). Vibrant color, used with 15c Black (77), s.e. at right, tied by circle of wedges cancel, red "Boston Am. Pkt. Paid 17 Aug." (1866) backstamp on small cover to Jaffa,
Syria, red "24" crayon credit, red London Paid transit datestamp (Aug. 30), Calais transit datestamp and red boxed "PD" handstamp, Alexandria and receiving backstamps, slightly reduced at left and minor edgewear VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY
RARE 1861 ISSUE COVER TO SYRIA. VERY FEW COVERS TO SYRIA EXIST WITH UNITED STATES STAMPS ISSUED PRIOR TO 1869. At this time Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire. The 15c and 30c stamps on the cover offered here pay the 45c rate for British Mail
via Marseilles. The single rate was 33c, and the next weight increment required an additional 12c for a total 24c credit to Great Britain. Covers to Syria with issues prior to 1869 are extremely rare. A number of covers to Syria come from the
Reverend Dennis correspondence, but most of them have 1869 Pictorial Issue stamps. (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com |
