FINE APPEARANCE. THE UNIQUE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL STAMP INITIALED "RHM" WITH SMALL LETTERING.
Philip Wall recorded two examples of the "RHM" initials reading bottom-to-top and 31 examples with the letters reading top-to-bottom. In both cases the initials were written by New York Postmaster Robert H. Morris himself, in 1845 and 1847. This stamp is the only recorded example with small "RHM" initials. The 1974 P.F. certificate notwithstanding, its unusual character and unique status have troubled past specialists such as Philip T. Wall (Chronicle 97, pp. 13-14) and Stanley M. Piller (his book, p. 65), who seem inclined to dismiss it as a fake. To us it seems rather unlikely that a forger would create fake initials without attempting to replicate the known originals (and choose a defective stamp for his handiwork). Assuming the initials are genuine, as we believe, the stamp was probably initialed "RHM" by someone in the office of Robert H. Morris (perhaps a secretary).
