#28, 1868 12½c Blue, well centered horizontal pair, with especially rich color in a deep shade, tied to a petite 1870 cover from Sydney to a Lieutenant aboard the H.M.S.
Lee in Malta "or Elsewhere," pair tied by two-ring numeral "10" postmarks, "Sydney/FE 5 70" c.d.s. alongside, red manuscript "8" marking representing the British claim of 16c, red "London/Paid" transit c.d.s., back flap missing, very fine;
this most unusual franking is a 1c underpayment for direction through New York, with the cover having been carried by the Inman Liner's Etna which sailed February 11th and arrived at Queenstown on February 21st; an immensely rare
destination and certainly one of the showpiece Large Queen covers in existence; ex-Menich. (Image) |
