#R133ATC |
#R133ATC, $5,000.00 Yellow orange, green and black large die trial color proof on India, mounted on 140x185mm card, with full imprints on both sides, security
punch at bottom right, radiant rich colors on a bright white card, insignificant shallow mounting thin on the extreme right edge of the card, very fine. The $5,000.00 revenue was prepared for use, with the accepted colors being red orange, dark
green and black. In his book "The Legendary Persian Rug", Thomas C. Kingsley speculates that such a large denomination stamp's intended use was exclusively on large railroad mortgage documents. Apparently it was decided that its need would be so
rare, that is was never printed as a stamp. In a letter to Mr. Lamasure, Carpenter wrote "I send you the $5,000 stamp approved in the colors in which it is to be printed in case we have an order for this stamp - a very improbable contingency".
Although never printed in stamp form, the proofs and trial colors of the $5,000.00 Revenue stamp remain one of the most visually striking and desirable items in all of United States philately - not just for revenue and proof collectors - but to all
stamp collectors who appreciate the intricate design and beautiful engraving that give these large size stamps their iconic status. In addition to their extraordinary eye-appealing qualities, they are also extremely rare, with only a total of 15
examples of any size or color being recorded in private hands. However, this stunning example which has not been on the market since 1972, is one of only three trial color proofs to show full imprints on both sides. It is, unquestionably, the finest
of the three due to its overall condition and size of margins which have not been cut down. A magnificent showpiece of extraordinary beauty and rarity and an incomparable opportunity to own one of the most recognizable gems in all of philately. (Image) |

R133ATC |
#R133ATC, $5,000.00 Yellow orange, green and black, large die trial color proof on India, large margins all around, gorgeous rich color and highly detailed
impressions, slight thins, one of which causes a faint stain at the top right, very fine appearance. In his census of the $5,000.00 proofs and trial colors, Thomas Kingsley records three examples in yellow orange, green and black (including the
previous lot). However, this example (#5M-9) has the yellow orange color incorrectly listed as orange, making a total of only four examples with this color combination - making it even more rare than the proof in the accepted colors. Adding further
to this proof's rarity is the fact that only two of the four do not have the security punch (both of these are stamp size). Virtually all of the off-card examples of the $5,000.00 Revenue stamp have faults to some degree, due to the fragile India
paper and the large size of the stamp.A lovely example of this rare and eye-arresting trial color proof; ex-Little. (Image) |

R133ATC |
#R133ATC, $5,000.00 Orange red, dark green and black large die trial color proof on India, large balanced margins all around, showing a small portion of the
imprint at right, beautiful vibrant colors, small tear at top right and a shallow thin spot at bottom, very fine. This is the only recorded example in this color combination (and the basis for the listing in the Scott catalog) according to the
census taken by Thomas Kingsley. There are three color combinations of the $5,000.00 Revenue proof that are unique. One is in orange red, dark blue and black. It was part of Thomas Kingsely's personal collection. It has small faults and realized
$13,200.00 when last sold in a 2003 auction. Another is the olive drab, green and black. It was described in the Kingsley book as having "a very unpleasant bilious appearance". The third unique proof is the example offered here.An eye-arresting
showpiece of exceptional desirability, not only for its unique status, but also for its outstanding appearance. (Image) |

#R133AP1 |
#R133AP1, $5,000.00 Red orange, dark green and black, large die proof on India, large margins all around that show a faint trace of an imprint at right, brilliantly
rich colors, two shallow thin spots and a trivial stain above the "T" in "Thousand", otherwise very fine.In the Kingsley book, he classifies the orange shades into two distinct groups. One having red orange and dark green colors and the other
group with orange and green. This proof he puts in with the former group, listing it as a deep red orange. He records only three examples falling into the red orange shade category. While this has a few minor flaws, they are not at all distracting,
and the overall condition of this proof is quite superior to most off-card examples of the $5,000.00 Revenue. This particular copy has not been on the market in over 40 years.A gorgeous example that would enhance any serious United States
collection of proofs, revenues or postage stamps. (Image) |
