#70b, 24c Steel blue, a remarkably high quality
used example of this truly scarce and often misidentified stamp, as the
Steel blue shade is almost never encountered with the impressive
characteristics this stamp possesses, including being exceptionally well
centered within uncharacteristically large margins, plus its color could
not be a more perfect example of a true Steel blue shade, strong crisp
impression on bright paper, beautifully postmarked with a light neat strike
of a striking red grid cancel, extremely fine; a highly select
example of this scarce shade that is rarely found in this premium
condition; 2004 PF certificate. (Image) |

#74, 3c Scarlet, an exceptionally handsome
appearing used example of this trial printing rarity, characteristic four
stroke pen cancel (internal paper break along the second pen stroke),
outstanding centering within very large margins, gloriously intense color
and a razor-sharp impression on bright paper, fully intact perforations all
around, even still retaining its full original gum, extremely fine despite
the break caused by the heavy ink of the pen stroke; very few examples of
the Three Cent Scarlet exist, whether mint or used, and despite the
disparity in catalog value we believe the used examples are far more
elusive than mint copies; the used examples with pen strokes are thought to
come from a supply of Three Cent Scarlet stamps obtained by the Washington,
D.C. stamp dealer Carl F. Rothfuchs in 1893; clear 1981 PF certificate and
a 2006 PF certificate. (Image) |

#79, 3c Rose, "A" grill, used single with typical
pastel rose color, lightly cancelled with central target cancel, unusually
intact full perforations with a corner perforation crease at top right,
otherwise nearly very fine; because the grill was strong and covered the
entire stamp it was not long used as it damaged perforations and made
separation difficult, this example much better than usually seen; 2006 PF
certificate. (Image) |

#84, 2c Black, "D" grill, an exceptional quality
used example of one of the rarest of all the grilled issues, in addition to
being one of the most challenging to find in premium condition such as
this, possessing marvelous centering amid very large margins most
uncharacteristic of the "D" grills, especially strong and intense color,
well defined grill impression, light segmented cork cancel, extremely fine;
a major condition rarity, with only a handful that exist in comparable
quality; 1957, 1992 and 2006 PF certificates; ex-Engel, Floyd. (Image) |
