OFFICE/PER/HONOLULU, HAWAIIAN IDS. Large red double lozenge handstamp
on gray envelope to the Reverend Abner Wilcox in Hanalei, Kauai, bold black
"Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Oct. 12" circular datestamp, original enclosure
is part-printed 1866 invoice: "N.B. - Quarterly Postage Bills Must be Paid
When Presented. Honolulu, September 30th 1866, Rev. A.
Wilcox, To Honolulu Post Office, Dr., To Postage to date -- 6
Mos. -- $3.35"EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED
EXAMPLES OF THIS HONOLULU GENERAL POST OFFICE HANDSTAMP, OF WHICH TWO ARE
KNOWN USED AS AN OFFICIAL CORNER CARD. ONLY THIS COVER HAS THE ORIGINAL
POST OFFICE ENCLOSURE. There are three reported covers with the
distinctive large red lozenge handstamp used by the Honolulu Post Office
both as a corner card and as a postmark. The other corner-card usage was
recently sold as part of the Floyd Fitzpatrick collection (Rumsey Sale 22,
lot 1958, realized $7,250 hammer). It is also addressed to Reverend Wilcox,
but does not have the enclosure. The postmark usage was lot 2213 in the
Honolulu Advertiser sale (Siegel Sale 769). Ex Honolulu

Hawaii Mar. 2, 1899" double line datestamp (Ty. 282.11) on legal-size cover
to Roxbury Mass. with purple "General Post Office. Honolulu"
straightline handstamp and red "R" (Ty. 701) registry handstamp, purple San
Francisco and Boston registry transits on front and back, some trivial
stamp faults as is to be expected in a cover of this type, still Very Fine,

Two vertical pairs tied by multiple strikes of reddish purple "General
Post Office Honolulu Jun. 2, 1900" double-circle datestamp (Ty. 282.21)
on cover to W. O. Smith in Honolulu, blue crayon "From A. Lidgate"
(at this time Lidgate was the manager of the Hamakua Mill on the Big
Island), stamps and cover slightly toned, otherwise Fine, this datestamp
was used both as an official post office auxiliary marking and as a

covers are known with this provisional postage handstamp, with 1962 P.F.

Custom House Lahaina
Maui. Blue negative seal with illustration of full-rigged ship in
center (Ty. 303, Rarity 1R), clear strike on front only to the
Reverend Richard Armstrong, a member of the Fifth Company of missionaries,
as President of the Board of Education in Honolulu, ms. "Official" written
over marking, pencil docketing at left, "Jan. 9/1860", tiny erosion
hole just below "President"VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE SCARCE LAHAINA
CUSTOMS SEAL HANDSTAMP. Cornelius Bartow, the Lahaina postmaster, had
earlier requested a regular mail canceller, but used the circular "Custom
House" seal in the interim. In a follow-up letter to the
postmaster-general, he wrote: "Did you order a stamp for the department
of this place? It seems to me very necessary, as I am now compelled to use

Lahaina Hawaiian-Islands
Dec. 8. Bold circular datestamp in olive green (Ty. 243.02) on large
buff cover to Warren Goodale as Collector General of Customs in Honolulu,
shortly before he resigned to join the U.S. Army, effective December 31,
1863, ms. "Free P.H.T." (P. H. Treadway), bit reduced at
left, far from markings and address, Very Fine and rare, unlisted in
American Stampless Cover Catalog, in addition to his duties as
postmaster, Treadway was sheriff and Collector of Customs, ex Honolulu

"Wailuku P.O./May
31". Manuscript postmark in two lines with matching "Free" on folded
letter datelined "Makawao May 30, 1850" from D. D. Baldwin to his
missionary father in LahainaVERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST FORM OF
WAILUKU POSTMARK, APPLIED BY THE FIRST "UNOFFICIAL" POSTMASTER, REVEREND
EDWARD W. BAILEY. According to Gregory, the Wailuku post office was
officially established in 1859. Prior to 1859, the Reverend Eward W. Bailey
served as an unofficial postmaster. This Wailuku postmark, reported to be
the earliest example extant, is in the hand of the Reverend Bailey. The
"Free" was not necessary since inter- and intra-island mail was
postage-free by legislative order until 1859. Ex Ostheimer and

cork cancel on orange-buff cover to Springfield Vt. originating in Hawaii
with blue "Wailuku Post Office, Hawaiian Islands, Oct. 18, 1869"
double-oval ribbon-marker datestamp (Ty. 215, Rarity 1RRR) on back,
"Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Oct. 20" circular datestamp and magenta "San
Francisco Cal. Oct. 31" double-circle transit datestamp, neatly docketed,
opening faults along top edge repaired with paper, opened for display, Fine
and a very exhibitable example of this extremely rare town marking, Gregory
