S.G. #56, 1898 2 1/2p Columbus Commemorative, archival proof in the issued ultramarine color, imperforate on white paper, affixed to piece of archival sheet with manuscript date of July 1, 1898, apparently indicating approval of the color, very fine; because of the size of this and the other trial colors it is not possible to tell whether these are plate proofs or die proofs, but given the very limited number and context of production, it is quite likely they are die proofs (Scott #47). S.G. #56, 1898 2 1/2p Columbus Commemorative, trial color proofs, eight different in orange, carmine, dark brown, slate black, dark green, purple, dark blue and issued ultramarine, all imperforate on white gummed paper, but most retaining only a portion of the gum, all with thinning at top, perhaps from being removed from archival pages on which they were mounted, issued ultramarine color has tear in top left corner, mostly very fine appearance; we have seen these eight proofs offered in several auctions over the past 50 years and we are convinced that these are all the same set and thus this may be the only set available; ex-Gilbert-Lodge, Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #47). S.G. #56, 1898 2 1/2p Columbus Commemorative, vertical strip of four and block of eight (2x4), on a First Day Cover of this first commemorative of Grenada, on appropriately large 2p Gray registry envelope (H&G #C1e; 292x152mm) with essentially central "St. George's/Grenada/AU 18 98" first day c.d.s., a couple cancels on the block just tie and matching strike on the cover, posted to Georgetown, British Guiana, where backstamped, very fine example of this largest and little used registry envelope; the Columbus Commemorative was scheduled to be issued on August 15th but there was a three day delay in receiving the stamps from England, which is well documented in the "Grenada Government Gazette", this cover is the only recorded first day cover for this commemorative stamp (Scott #47). S.G. #56, 1898 2 1/2p Columbus Commemorative, two blocks of six (2x3) on large 2p Gray registry envelope (H&G #C1e; 292x152mm), light central "St. Georges/Grenada/SP 15 98" c.d.s., one block tied and matching strike on cover, to Georgetown, British Guiana, the right block affixed close to edge where opened causing small faults to three stamps, otherwise very fine for this oversized registry cover that saw very little use; many British countries did not even have the large "k" size registry envelope and when they did few were used and even less were saved (Scott #47).

S.G. #56, 1898 2 1/2p Columbus Commemorative, tied to cover for posting to Barbados, additionally two 1895 1p Mauve and carmine (S.G. #49) applied, all tied by "St. George's/Grenada/OC 28 98" c.d.s., this cover was posted the morning the mail packet arrived and thus was assessed a late fee of 2p, portion of straight line "(La)te Fee" handstamp at right, Barbados squared circle backstamp, exceptionally fresh and extremely fine; a pretty and scarce usage (Scott #40, 47). 1902 Ship cover to London, mailed on board a ship which made port at St. George's with 1901 1p Black on red of Trinidad (S.G. #127), cancelled by straight line "Paquebot" handstamp, this handstamp had been sent to Grenada in 1899 and is the only "Paquebot" cancel that was used on the island, "St. George's/Grenada/JU 20 02" c.d.s. at left, put into the normal British transatlantic post to England since the franking paid the British Empire rate and backstamped London, opened on two sides and a few light edge wrinkles, otherwise very fine and a very scarce usage. 1902 6p Green and orange Key Plate essay, a generic essay to show this design, inscribed "Imperium" in the country name tablet, imperforate and affixed to small piece of archival sheet with "4d." written at right, a 4p value was never ordered by Grenada and this color combination continued to be used for the 1/- value as it had been in the previous Queen Victoria issue, very fine; ex-Towers (Scott #53). S.G. #57s-66s, 1902 1/2p-10/- King Edward VII, wmk. Crown CA, with "Specimen" overprints cplt. these are the normally issued specimens that were distributed to the UPU countries, but this set, going to a Portuguese country, received the additional "Ultramar" handstamp overprint in blue, only three stamps with tiny corner creases, without gum as these were affixed to an archival page, which has caused the green color to change to a more yellow green, otherwise very fine and actually a remarkably nice set of these, it is not uncommon for these Portuguese sets to have numerous faults of a more serious nature than exhibited here (Scott #48S-57S). S.G. #57, 58, 1902 1/2p Dull purple and green and 1p Dull purple and carmine pair, tied to neat cover to the United States by "St. Patrick's/Grenada/DE 15 04" c.d.s. with clear strike at left, St. George's transit and backstamped New York, cover opened out, otherwise very fine; this parish name cancel was probably used at the community of Sauteurs starting in 1898 until 1907 when a cancel was issued for Sauteurs, very scarce (Scott #48, 49). Crown CA, tied to small 2p Prussian blue registry envelope (H&G #C3; 133x83) to Guatemala, stamps tied by clear strikes of small "St. George's/Grenada/SP 25 02" c.d.s. and by the large registry receiving handstamp of Guatemala City, Colon and Panama transits on the reverse, minor edge wear to cover, otherwise very fine; a nice contemporaneous usage of the first King Edward VII stamps and stationery to a scarce destination (Scott #48, 50).
