1435 c image1916 (Nov 23) stampless POW envelope to ".../New Zealand Prisoner of War/Bilemedik Ponzanti/co Red Crescent Society/Constantinople/via Geneva" with 'OTAKEHO' cds & superb generic censor cachet in violet, British 'PW84' censor label on the reverse and a fair Ottoman double-boxed cachet proving receipt in Turkey, light overall soiling. [According to the NZ History website, there were only 25 New Zealanders held by the Ottomans as POWs, six of whom died in captivity. The addressee, Private William Robert Surgenor, was captured at Gallipoli 8.8.1915; was hospitalised in Constantinople; sent to Cankiri, where conditions were punitive; and, in July 1916, to Bilimedik Ponzanti, to work on railway construction in a mountainous region. Remarkable origin/destination item, with triple censorship.

1438 PSE image1968 (April 6) two Great Britain QEII 6d Parliament aerogrammes to New Zealand with machine cancels of Holegate (Sussex) or Walton-on-the-Naze (Essex) respectively, both burnt at the edges, one with British 'SALVAGED FROM AIRCRAFT/ACCIDENT LONDON' handstamp in green, both enclosed in see-through 'ambulance' sleeves with 'OFFICIALLY SEALED - NEW ZEALAND POST OFFICE' red/yellow tape, the glassine and seals a little crinkled. BOAC Flight 712 departed Heathrow Airport on 8.4.1968. Shortly after take-off, one of the engines failed, caught fire and detached from the aircraft. The pilot was able to return to Heathrow and make an emergency landing but, in the resulting fire, five people died and some of the mail on board was damaged or destroyed. (2)
